Callipogon barbatum has strong jaws or mandibles for cutting wood. Dynastes hercules only fly after midnight. Some males can reach lengths of 14 cm. They use their double horns to fight for their territory or to fight for a female. Dynastes hyllus have shorter horns. Euchroma gigantea are known as the metallic bark beetles. They are also known as ceiba wood-borers. Acrocinus longimanus is the beetle with the longest front legs in the world. Macrodontia species have long pointed mandibles. Cerogenes auricoma have long, soft, white secretions and are found in the cloud forests. Fulgora laternaria is the peanut-head bug. It sucks the sap from the soft trees. Chrysina cavei is an example of the brilliant jewel beetles of Honduras. This species is only found in the country of Honduras. Euglossinae are orchid bees. Males visit orchids to acquire a chemical that their bodies will convert into a phermone to attract the female. Phrictus tripartitus have a strange extension on the head. Myndus crudus is the insect that killed most of the tall coconut trees of Honduras. It is a vector and transmits a virus or bacteria to the leaves of the coconut plants. Blaberus is the genus of one of the very large cockroaches that live in the forest debris or dead trees. Pepsis wasps are known as tarantula hawks. The females sting the tarantula spiders. The tarantula is paralyzed. The wasp drags the tarantula into a hole where it lays an egg. When the larva hatches it feeds on the tarantula. Choeradodis is known as the hooded praying mantis. Corydalus is known as the dobsonfly. The male has long pinchers and can give a painful bite. |
